Disclosed are a liquid crystal display device provided with a multi-primary color panel capable of improving the display quality of the vicinity of a monochromatic color, and a control method therefor. Specifically provided is a liquid crystal display device for performing display by the input of image signals of three colors from the outside. Said liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal display panel and a backlight, a plurality of pixels each including picture elements of four or more colors are formed in a display region of the liquid crystal display panel, each of the pixels includes picture elements of three colors in which color filters having colors corresponding to the colors of the image signals are respectively formed, and a picture element of at least one color in which a color filter having a color corresponding to a color other than the colors of the image signals is formed, the light emission intensity of the backlight can be controlled according to the inputted image signals, and the light emission intensity of the backlight when a monochromatic color or a color close to the monochromatic color is displayed in the display region is higher than that when a white color is displayed in the display region. |
