Poly (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene) is made by contacting 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene with a catalyst formed by mixing a di- or tri-alkyl aluminium compound and an organic compound of a metal of Group IV (a), V (a), VI (a), or VIII of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleeff, namely an acetylacetonate of these metals which does not contain inorganic radicals e.g. cobalt di(acetylacetone), or vanadyl di (acetylacetone). The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymer is recovered by known techniques. Exemplified aluminium compounds are diethylaluminium chloride and aluminium tri-isobutyl.
