<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sophisticated menu without re-rendering the whole screen as a menu or dynamically adding or removing a button to and from the screen. <P>SOLUTION: In a method for generating an on-screen menu including menu buttons (BG81, ..., BG86') and other menu items (e.g. help text), one or more groups of menu buttons or menu items are defined, and each group includes one or more menu buttons or menu items and is associated with a defined area on the screen. An "enabled" (operable) state or a "disabled" (non-operable) state is assigned to a button, wherein only an enabled button may be displayed, and one button or item within the group may be enabled.
