The method involves determining a preceding vehicle as a target vehicle for distance regulation by a sensor, which detects the preceding vehicle within a predetermined detection range. A probable position of the preceding vehicle is determined after leaving the predetermined detection range by the preceding vehicle. Data of a driving surface at a region of the probable position of the preceding vehicle is determined by card data stored in a storage device. The preceding vehicle is maintained as the target vehicle for the distance regulation based on the determined data. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle comprising a device for regulating distance of the vehicle to another vehicle.
