Detergent compositions comprise (1) an active detergent selected from the group consisting of anionic synthetic, non-ionic, ampholytic and zwitterionic detergents and mixtures thereof (exhaustive exemplification being made), and (2) a builder mixture consisting of (a) a water-soluble salt of ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonic acid and (b) a water-soluble polyphosphate and/or nitrilotriacetic acid salt, the molar proportions of (a) and (b) being within defined limits, the weight ratio of (1) to (2) being from 1:0.5 to 1:10, and the composition providing a pH of 9-12 in aqueous solution. Component (b) includes Na, K, and NH4 tripolyphosphates and pyrophosphates. Optional additives include alkali metal carbonates, bicarbonates, borates, phosphates, silicates, and sulphates, trichlorocarbanilide, and potassium toluene sulphonate. The compositions may be prepared in granular, flake, tablet, or liquid form, and in the latter case the base liquid may be water, alcohol or a mixture thereof.
