Plants are grown in elongated containers 2 supported on a framework 1 in tiers in stepped formation. Perforated pipes 3 extend through the growing medium and are separated therefrom by a sheet of fibreglass 5, water or liquid nutrient being supplied to the pipes 3 from subsidiary tanks 9 supplied from a main tank 8. A water level indicating tube may be attached to each container. The containers may be channel shaped or comprise tubes provided with apertures through which the plants may grow. The apparatus is particularly described for growing tomato plants by the one-truss method and wires 7 are provided to support the plants. The pipes 3 may be connected to a source of steam prior to planting so that the growth medium can be sterilized. |
