A dental handpiece control system includes a motor control unit comprising a circuit, a display and control module for monitoring and affecting changes to the dental handpiece motor, and a bi-directional wireless communication said motor control unit and said display and control module, such that the parameters of operation of the handpiece can be selectively adjusted; said parameters including those selected from the group consisting of handpiece motor torque, speed, gear ratios and combinations thereof.
