PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the characteristics of an electronic shutter approximate to the characteristics of a mechanical shutter. SOLUTION: A timing generation circuit 31 generates timing pulses for controlling the electronic shutter. When the electronic shutter is used as a front curtain, and the mechanical shutter is used as a rear curtain, the mechanical shutter has a possibility that exposure time may differ by line since speed changes to perform an acceleration motion. The timing pulses are generated by the timing generation circuit 31 so that the control of the electronic shutter is performed to match the change in the speed of the mechanical shutter. Namely, the timing pulses are generated so that the number of lines to be read simultaneously gradually increases, as in: one line, two lines, four lines, eight lines, with the passage of time from the start of reading.
