Hydroxymethylcycloalkanes are prepared by heating a cycloalkene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen under pressure in the presence of a cobalt compound using an alcohol or ester as solvent, e.g. ethanol, butanol, or an ethyl or butyl ester. Preferably the cycloakane has from 5 to 12 carbon atoms in the ring and the action is carried out at a temperature of between 125-170 DEG C., and at a gauge pressure of between 50 and 300 atmospheres. The cobalt compound may be dissolved in the alcohol ester and heated under pressure with carbon monoxide and hydrogen before the cycloalkene is introduced. Examples show the production of hydroxy-methycyclo-pentane, -hexane, -octane, -do-decane from the corresponding cycloalkenes. |
