In a reciprocating shear for trimming the edges of plates the movable blade is inclined at an acute angle to a surface supporting the plate and in the open position overlaps the stationary blade, the angle of inclination and the length of the cutting stroke being such that at the end of the cutting stroke the entry end of the movable blade is spaced away from the support by a distance equal to the thickness of the plate to be cut, and there are auxiliary transverse cutters situated at the delivery end of the blades for cutting up the strip trimmed from the plate edge. The blade 2 reciprocates in the frame 1 and co-operates with a stationary blade 6, the cutting edge of which is level with a surface 4 which supports the plate 5. A transverse cutter 10 is secured to the blade 2 and a co-operating transverse cutter 11 is secured to a blade-holder 14 which is moved vertically by a fluid cylinder 16 acting through a toggle mechanism 15. The shear is shown in the open position in Fig. 1, and in this position the distance between the upper blade and the lower blade is less than the thickness of the plate to be cut. Operation.-The plate 5 is pushed between the blades in the direction of the arrow 20 until it strikes the upper blade and is then clamped by hold-downs. The blade 2 descends to trim the plate-edge and returns to the position shown. The plate is pushed further through the blades, the cutter 11 having previously been lowered so that the passage of the trimmed strip which is bent down is not obstructed. The cutter 11 is then raised to its operative position and on the next stroke of the shear co-operates with the cutter 10 to chop the trimmed-off strip transversely. In a modification, the machine is inverted.</p> |
