MOTION ESTIMATION METHOD USING MULTIPLE REFERENCE IMAGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motion estimation method using multiple reference images in which fast motion estimation is performed, even if a resolution of a motion vector becomes high.

SOLUTION: The motion estimation method uses video signals of a plurality of frames preceding temporally as a plurality of reference images. The motion estimation method includes the steps of: (a) analyzing reference index information representing a reference images of peripheral blocks encoded already among blocks around a current block; and (b) selecting one reference image indicated by the reference index information of the peripheral blocks from among the plurality of reference images to perform motion estimation of the current block on the selected one reference image when the reference index information of the peripheral blocks is identical, and performing motion estimation of the current block on all of the plurality of reference images when the reference index information of the peripheral blocks is not identical.
