摘要 An alloy having one phase consisting of a basis metal and another diatomic phase consisting of an element of the basis metal and another element is made by forming the diatomic phase on the surface or within a sheet of the basis metal which is coiled on itself to form a coiled sheet billet and then extruding the billet. Thus a dispersion-hardened alloy may be made by surface oxidation of a strip of suitable alloy e.g. Ag-Mg or Cu-Be, heating to promotion diffusion of the oxide throughout the strip, coiling and extruding. Alternatively the heating to promote diffusion may be effected after coiling e.g. by the heating to extrusion temperature. A superconducting structure may be formed by juxtaposing a strip of Nb and a strip of Zr, coiling the duplex strip, and extruding. Prior to extrusion the coiled billet may be held at the extrusion temperature for sufficient time for some of the superconducting Nb-Zr phase to form at the interface of the Nb and Zr plies. A similar structure comprising a superconducting Nb-Sn phase is formed by employing a strip of Sn-Cu or Sn-Ag alloy instead of a strip of Zr. An alloy having the required microstructure may also be produced by diffusing nitrogen or carbon into a strip coiling and extruding.
