Acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile are made by reacting propylene and isobutylene respectively with ammonia and oxygen in the gaseous phase at 350 DEG to 600 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst containing Mo, Bi and oxygen, sulphuric acid or a sulphate having been used in the preparation in a proportion of up to 30%. Steam may be an inert diluent in the gaseous reaction stream.ALSO:An aminoxidation catalyst comprises Mo, Bi and O supported on an inert carrier material, H2SO4 or a salt thereof having been used in its preparation in a proportion of up to 30%. Specified sulphates are Na2SO4, ZnSO4, CdSo4 and BaSo4. Specified carriers are SiO2, SiC, Al2O3 and clay. The catalysts may be extruded in cylindrical pieces 3 mm. in diameter and 5-10 mm. long. |
