A device for filling trays 2 of the kind used for transferring cigarettes in bulk to a packaging machine, comprises a cigarette infeed conveyer for forming a row of cigarettes opposite a transfer device for sweeping the row into a tray and means 15 which is automatically inserted behind the last cigarette of a row, in response to counting means 6, to separate the row, check cigarettes advancing behind it and act as a guide during transfer. A braking element 507 may form a gap in the incoming cigarette stream to facilitate the insertion. The conveyer consists of two spaced belts 3, 103, see also Figs. 1, 5 (not shown), scanned by photo-electric means 6 which, when the desired number of cigarettes has passed beneath it, causes the block 507 to rise between the belts to lift and halt the cigarettes above it and so create a gap in the flow. Linkage 17, 18, see also Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), now swings a lever 13 carrying the element 15 upwards so that the latter enters the gap. The lever is pivoted for limited movement on a carriage 108, slidable in the direction of cigarette flow, and after the initial movement of the linkage has swung the lever upwards, the carriage moves along at the same speed as the cigarettes until the element 15 and a fixed stop 105 define the ends of the row opposite the transfer device, a transversely reciprocating pusher plate 5. The initial movement of the carriage caused to block 507 to be withdrawn. The plate 5 sweeps the row into the tray 2 which then descends one layer thickness. The carriage commences its return stroke, the initial movement withdrawing the tongue-piece beneath the belts and permitting continued cigarette flow.
