Disclosed is a portable terminal that is provided with a touchpad and an illumination unit for illuminating the touchpad; wherein when the illumination unit has been turned off, if contact with any range atop the touchpad is detected, then after the detection, it is assessed whether or not the number of ranges that have been touched atop the touchpad within a first amount of time is greater than or equal to a predetermined number, and if a negative assessment is made, the illumination unit is turned on, and if a positive assessment is made, the illumination unit is not turned on.
