The device has a locking device (8) that prevents firing of a firearm (1) in a locked condition. A communication unit (9) e.g. radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder, is associated with a user to transmit user-specific signals e.g. feature of user in coded form. An electronic unit (10) has a receiver for receiving the signals from the communication unit. A processing device identifies an authorized user based on the signals and unlocks the locking device during identification of the authorized user. An operating device (11) transfers the electronic unit into an active condition. The operating device is selected from a group consisting of a switch, a push-button, a mercury switch, a button, a touch screen, a trigger piece and a sensor.
