A thermal regenerator comprises at least one pair of rotary discs of heat storing material 1, 2, mounted facing one another in spaced, substantially parallel planes, and enclosed within a casing 3; one heat exchange fluid being admitted to the space between the discs and flowing in opposite directions through the discs to their outer faces, whilst at the same time, the other fluid flows to the outer faces of the discs, and thence to the space between the discs. The respective fluid paths through the discs are defined by radial seals 11 (Fig. 2, not shown). Peripheral seals 12 prevent the mixing of the two fluids. The gas or air to be heated enters the regenerator via inlets in the outer periphery, either, entering the space 5 between the discs, flowing through the discs to the outer spaces 6 and 7, and out through the outlets 6a, 7a in the outer periphery, as shown; or it may flow in the reverse direction (Fig. 3, not shown). The heating gas passes through the discs in the opposite direction to the gas being heated ; from inlets 8a, 9a to an outlet 10a, as shown; or, in the alternative form (Fig. 3, not shown) entering the space between the discs via a duct 14 located in the space 4. The hot exhaust gas passes through approximately twothirds of the disc; the gas to be heated passing through the remaining third.
