The device (1) has two rollers (4,5), a band-like drive unit (3) lying close to rollers, a drive area (7) extending itself between the rollers and a drive (12) for the drive unit. The rollers and drive area are arranged one behind the other in direction of the orientation of a centerline (10). An independent claim is also included for a method for cutting operating of upper surface of workpiece.
