A finely divided noble metal or mixture or alloy thereof or a mixture or alloy thereof with transition metal(s) is activated by treatment with a solution having a pH from 8 to 14. Noble metals are Au, Ag, Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Os and Re. Transition metals are defined as those of atomic number 21 - 30, 39 - 48 and 57 - 80. Basic reagents for treating the transition metal are LiOH, NaOH, KOH, LiOH, Na 2 SiO 3 , CaO, Na 3 PO 4 , Na 2 CO 3 or ammonia. All the examples describe the treatment with basic reagents of alloys e.g. Pt-Ru, Ir-Ru, and Ir-Ru-Re. |
