[Also in Division C7] An electric gas discharge burner comprises a high-frequency A.C. coil 16 surrounding a sheath 1 of high m.p. material movable with respect to the coil and rotatable about its axis and means 33 for feeding pulverulent material to the sheath. The sheath 1 of quartz glass which may be cooled rotates in bearings 2, 3 mounted in plates 4, 5 rigidly connected by rods 6, 7, the assembly being movable on supports 17, 18. A water-cooled crucible 21 is mounted in the sheath below a transverse plate 19 containing an aperture 20. The discharge is started with the coil 16 near the top of the sheath by introducing gases through tubes 9, 10 to a head 8 above tube 1 and applying a potential across electrodes 14, 15. The discharge is moved towards wall 19 and controlled by the gas supply and rotational speed of the sheath. Material is introduced through tube 33 and accumulates at 34 above the plate 19. The gas supply is gradually stopped and the inner layer of the accumulation 34 melts and passes into the crucible the remainder near the sheath becoming sintered. When material which is electrically conducting at high temperatures is treated, an uninterrupted coating of material is avoided by providing thickened portions of the sheath. The lower part of the tube can be evacuated via aperture 25 to assist degassing. Wire, thin rod, tube and granular material of constant size of metals, alloys, oxides and carbides can be produced.</p>
