In a beam balance in which a beam 10 having a fixed knife 11 is pivotally supported on a bearing block 12 mounted on a frame 14, a cylindrical guide member 24 mounted on the beam is disposed between two vertical guide edges 19b and is arranged so that its axis is in the same straight line as the line of contact between the knife 11 and the bearing block 12, at least one intermediate member 27 being provided between the guide member 24 and guide edges 19b to permit vertical movement of the guide member 24 between the guide edges 19b. The upper surface of the bearing block 12 may be plane or comprise a V-shaped groove parallel to the knife 11 and the lower surface of the block 12 may be curved and may also be mounted on a movable support within the frame Figs.9 and 10 (not shown). A rotatable member may form the intermediate member 27 in which case it comprises a ball bearing having an inner annular element connected to the beam 10 and an outer rotatable element arranged within a rectangular aperture of an extension 14b connected to the frame 14.
