Heading C2C. 2-Acetonyloxazoles are prepared by reacting an alkyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, the acid having 2 to 18 carbon atoms inclusive, with a substituted or unsubstituted 2-methyloxazole of the benzene or naphthalene or other ortho divalent arylene series in an N,N-disubstituted amide of a fatty acid whose alkyl portion contains from 1 to 5 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali metal hydride, any substituent on the 2- methyloxazole being non-reactive. The amide is preferably an N,N-dimethyl amide especially dimethyl formamide and dimethyl acetamide. The preferred aliphatic carboxylic acids are acetic acid and propionic acid. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature between 10‹ and 150‹ C. Suitable 2- methyloxazoles include 2-methylbenzoxazole, 2,5,6 - trimethylbenzoxazole, 2 - methyl - 5- ethylbenzoxazole, 2 - methyl - 4 - bromobenzoxazole, 2 - methyl - 5 - octyl - benzoxazole, 2 - methyl - naphth - (2,3) - oxazole, 2 - methyl - naphth - (2,1) - oxazole and 2- methyl - naphth - (1,2) - oxazole. The examples describe the preparation of 2-acetonylbenzoxazole, 2 - (# - chloroacetonyl) - benzoxazole, 2 - (# - methylacetonyl) - 5,6 - dimethylbenzoxazole, 2 - (# - heptadecylacetonyl)- 5,6 - dimethylbenzoxazole, 2 - (# - methylacetonyl) - naph - (1,2) - oxazole, 2 - acetonyl. 5,6 - dimethylbenzoxazole, 2 - acetonyl - 5- chlorobenzoxazole, 2 - acetonyl - 5 - phenylbenzoxazole and 2 - (# - methylacetonyl)- benzoxazole.</p> |
