<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for modifying coal using a biomass which includes carbonizing the biomass to produce a biomass coal with increased calorific value while permitting modification of low-grade coal. <P>SOLUTION: The process for modifying coal using a biomass includes contacting a carbonization product, obtained from carbonization, with a coal in a modification furnace 2, resulting in reduction of moisture content in the coal due to sensible heat of the carbonization product and in adhesion of the tar contained in the carbonization product to the coal, during production of a biomass coal by carbonizing a biomass in a biomass carbonization furnace 1.
