<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system, capable of notifying a failure, and also notifying even contents of the failure, and to provide a failure notification method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: An optical signal is transmitted and received between a slave unit 2 and a master unit 1 connected by an optical fiber through the optical fiber. The slave unit 2 collects internal failure information, performs ON/OFF control for allowing ON/OFF of the optical signal have information of failure contents by using slave unit control unit a7, and transmits data showing internal failure information by a data string of ON and OFF from an electricity→light conversion circuit a2.
