PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a flaw by connecting candidate flaw areas which are considered to be the same flaw, even if there is a high probability that the luminance change in the flaw is large and can be divided by binarization. SOLUTION: A gray scale image of a surface of wood taken by a monochrome line sensor camera is input to an image processing device 4. A candidate flaw area is extracted by a candidate flaw extraction means 12 by using a binary image obtained by binarizing the gray scale image. Further, the candidate flaw area is re-extracted by a candidate flaw re-extraction means 15 using a binary image binarized by using a threshold value set for each piece 32. A flaw determination means 16 determines a flaw for the re-extracted candidate flaw area. The candidate flaw area, which is determined to be not a flaw by the flaw determination means 16, is evaluated whether it can be connected or not by a connection evaluation means 17, and the candidate flaw area which can be connected is connected and redetermined whether it is flaw or not by a re-determination means 19.
