PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection method for evaluating whether a checksum error in a radio communication system is caused by an erasure condition or by a DTX condition. SOLUTION: A soft symbol or a function of the soft symbol is divided by a normalizing factor, thereby greatly reducing the effect of the overall magnitude of the channel estimates that are used to calculate the soft symbol, restoring a value proportional to the received symbol energy. Then, this value rather than the unnormalized value is evaluated. Normalizing the soft symbol to obtain a metric proportional to the actual symbol energy greatly reduces the effect of the overall channel level on DTX detection, making it easier to distinguish between DTX cases and erasure cases.
