PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steam turbine and a method for operating the same, which prevent steam leakage from a casing and improves performance of the turbine, even if the turbine is required to perform variable speed operation. SOLUTION: This steam turbine includes: a cabin internally having a space for storing the turbine 2H and also having a divided surface; a regulation unit 5 regulating the steam flow rate supplied to the turbine 2H; and a control section 6 performing control to regulate the reduction rate of the steam flow rate with respect to the regulation section 5 so that, when the steam flow rate supplied to the turbine 2H is reduced, the contact pressure in an area adjacent to the space in the divided surface is set to predetermined contact pressure or more.
