PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct the mismatch between the combustion states of cylinder groups without depending on the operating condition by detecting the operation phase difference between variable valve timing mechanisms with the combustion states of the cylinder groups matched. SOLUTION: A knock ignition timing ADV1 when valve overlap is eliminated is compared with a knock ignition timing ADV2 when an intake valve timing for a right bank is advanced by a set amount (S7). In the case of the ADV1>the ADV2, a change in an ignition timing is monitored while delaying the intake valve timing for the right bank (S8-S11). In the case of the ADV1≤the ADV2, a change in an ignition timing is monitored while advancing the intake valve timing for the right bank (S13-S16). Thus, the phase difference between the intake cam angles of right and left banks is recorded. With similar processing for an exhaust valve timing, a phase difference between the exhaust cam angles of the right and left banks is recorded.
