The method involves providing definite maximum creeping torque for a definite time period when speed of a motor vehicle (10) in a desired traveling direction is smaller than a definite speed threshold. The vehicle is retained in a standstill condition through a driving brake by forming and/or retaining a braking pressure for another definite time period when the vehicle rolls opposite to the desired direction. The vehicle is automatically retained in the standstill condition by a parking brake after a course of the latter period when a starting request is not present during the latter period.
