[Also in Division E2] A steering wheel lock operating a bolt 5 radially movable into the steering column has a " locked " position H in which a spring biased ignition switch 6 is broken and the bolt 5 moved into the column, a " garage " position G where the switch is broken and the bolt withdrawn, a " drive " position Z where the switch is made and the bolt withdrawn and a " starting " position A identical to the drive position and where the starting circuit is also made. All these positions may be selected with or without the use of a key, but once locked then the lock may only be released by a key. The mechanism comprises a rotating cylinder 3 in a cylinder lock 4, pins 7 being disposed in the cylinder 3 and sprung pins 8, 9 in the casing 4. The pins 7 abut the fatter pins 9 in the " garage " position, Fig. 4, with the key inserted and at other times the pins 9 merely abut the cylinder 3 and do not prevent its rotation. When the key is inserted in the " garage " position the pins 7 force back the pins 9 so that the key may be withdrawn. On its end face the cylinder 3 is connected to and may be rotated by a knob 10 in which a catch 11 pivoted at 13 is mounted to disengage a catch pin 17 from an arcuate slot 18 on the underside of the knob base 10<SP>1</SP>, which slot extends between the " garage " to the " starting " positions, Fig. 6. The pin 17 can be forced out of the groove 18 by the bevel on catch 11 to the undersurface of the base 10<SP>1</SP> by turning the knob 10 or the inserted key and depressing the catch 11. When the vehicle has been stopped and secured the cylinder 3 is in the " locked " position H in Fig. 5, and held from rotation by pins 8 and the bolt 5 is engaged. Insertion of the key pushes back the pins 8 and allows the cylinder to rotate 90 degrees to the " garage " position where the pin 17 enters the groove 18. The key is then removed and the knob and cylinder 3 can then be rotated between the " start and " garage " positions, where the bolt 5 is removed but the knob and cylinder 3 are prevented from moving into the " locked " position by the pin 17 which forms a rotation stop against the end of groove 18.
