<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, with improved viewing angle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of polarizing layers (18, 20), having absorption axes disposed orthogonal to each other; a liquid crystal cell LC having a pair of substrates (14, 16) which are disposed between the pair of polarizing layers and a liquid crystal layer (12) disposed between the pair of substrates; a first retardation layer 22, made of a uniaxial or a biaxial polymer film and disposed between the polarizing layer 18 and the liquid crystal cell; and a second retardation layer 24, disposed between the polarizing layer 20 and the liquid crystal cell LC. The in-plane lagging axis of the first retardation layer 22 is parallel to or orthogonal to the absorption axis of the polarizing layer 18, the first retardation layer 22 satisfies the expressions (I) to (II), and the second retardation layer 24 satisfies the expression (III): where expression (I): 10 nm≤Rel(550)≤500 nm, expression (II): -250 nm≤Rth1(550)≤700 nm, and expression (III): 1<R2[+40°]/R2[-40°]. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
