<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device in which an original cover moves up and down while keeping a horizontal state and can widely open a surface of an original platen by retreating to an ascended position. <P>SOLUTION: In the image reading device which forms a digital image by scanning an original set on an original platen 5 of a housing upper surface, upper and lower links in which one end thereof are rotatably connected to a side part of the housing 3 and a side part of an original cover 7 via pins 31 and 35, and the other end thereof are connected to be bendable into a chevron shape each other via hinge pins 39 are arranged in the front and the back; a connection board 41 connecting an interval between the front and rear hinge pins is provided; and pin holes formed in the original cover 7 are shaped as oblong holes 43 extending in the front and rear directions. The original cover is constituted so as to be movable parallel to a rear part side by enabling the pins so as to be movable along the oblong holes, in a state of with the respective links erected.
