PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining carnitine having reduced impurities and a high purity since L-carnitine is noticed as a therapeutic agent for heart disease, therapeutic agent for hyperlipemia, therapeutic agent for venous disease, etc., is also referred to as vitamin BT and is an important compound related to metabolism of fatty acid in an organism. SOLUTION: The method for purifying carnitine includes a step for removing (i) a compound represented by formula: R<SB>1</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>-CH(OH)-CH<SB>2</SB>-R<SB>2</SB>(wherein R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each the same or different and primary to quaternary amino or carboxy) and (ii) a compound represented by formula (2) (wherein R<SB>3</SB>is amide or carboxy) and/or crotonobetaine present in an alcohol solvent by filtration.
