The method involves representing unsolicited query on whether a configuration of a human-machine interface (1) is changed into another configuration of the human-machine interface. The return time for changing the latter configuration into the former configuration of the human-machine interface is determined. The latter configuration of the human-machine interface is evaluated as a function of time. An independent claim is also included for a human-machine interface for operating a vehicle.
