摘要 Hydrocarbons boiling at up to 350 DEG C. are reacted with steam at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alloy of (1) a base metal which is one or more Ni, Co, Cr and Mo with (2) Al, Mg or Zn, the alloy having been treated with a reagent which reacts with (2) but not substantially with (1) so that (2) is preferentially removed from the surface of the catalyst, and thereafter treating with alkali hydroxide solution such that the product catalyst contains alkali to the extent of at least 0.1% calculated as K2O. Examples describe the production of combustible gases from steam reforming naphtha at e.g. 500-800 DEG C. Data for product gas composition and calorific values are mentioned.ALSO:Reforming catalysts are made by treating an alloy containing one or more of Ni, Co, Cr, and Mo with an additional metal selected from Al, Mg and Zu, with a reagent which reacts with the additional metal but not substantially with the base metal, so that the additional metal is at least partially removed from a surface layer of the alloy, leaving a surface layer at least partially free from additional metal, and treating with an alkali hydroxide solution so that the product contains at least 0.1% K2o or equivalent. The reagent may itself be NaOH. When the additional metal is Zu or Mg the reagent may be a dilute acid, e.g. H.COOH or HCl. The catalyst may be sprayed onto the walls of a reaction vessel or prepared as crushed pieces or shaped bodies.
