1,133,059. Back-washable bed filter. SULZER BROS., Ltd. 22 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 43287/67. Heading BID. A back-washable filter plant comprises a nozzle floor 5 for supporting granular filter material 4; a collecting reservoir 9 for filtrate beneath the nozzle floor; dip pipes 7 for the nozzles 6, having air inlets 8; means (not shown) for introducing wash water into reservoir 9; a scouring air inlet-duct 12; and dip pipes 13 with air inlets 14 inside the duct 12 and outlets 16 above the level of the inlets 8 of the dip pipes 7. As described, the flow resistance of pipes 13 can be varied, e.g. by throttling. To clean the bed 4, compressed air, then a mixture of air and water, and then water only may be used. Air introduced through duct 12 forces water up through pipes 13 until the water level 15 is low enough to permit air to use into the space above water level 10, to displace water until level 10 is low enough to allow the air to rise through pipes 7. |
