1,107,686. Clamping and cutting laboratory tubing. J. S. HURLEY. 8 Nov., 1966 [8 Nov., 1965], No. 50045/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions A5 and Dl] An instrument, for simultaneously clamping and cutting for example laboratory tubing, comprises two separable clamping devices 10 and 11. As illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, 8 and 9. device 10 comprises elongate clamping elements 12, 13 hinged at 14, provided with latch 15 and cooperating abutment means 16, and having cooperating clamping faces 17, 18 which may be provided with mating teeth 19; device 11 comprises elongate clamping elements 22 and 23 hinged at 24, provided with latch 25 and cooperating abutment means 26, and having cooperating clamping faces 27, 28 which may be provided with mating teeth 29. Cooperating pins 30 and sockets 31 provide releasable means to hold the devices together. A knife blade 32 has one edge 33 anchored. for example by interlocking lugs 34. in a slot formed in clamping element 22 and the other edge 35 extending above the clamping face and adapted to be received in slot 28a of clamping element 23; the knife is spaced a predetermind distance from the abutting sides of the devices whereby a predetermined portion of severed material projects from the abutting side of the device which does not carry the knife. A plurality of needles 36 may be spaced along the clamping element carrying the knife to project above the cutting edge of the knife to engage and hold the material against slipping during the cutting thereof. Each device preferably is moulded from plastics material. for example polyethylene, polypropylene or copolymers thereof; needles 36 either may be of plastics material and formed integral with the clamping device or may be formed of metal, for example steel. |
