A generally two-dimensional charged particle beam (10) passes over at least a portion of the plurality of nano-resonant structures (8) and at a particular height above the surface. At least a portion of the plurality of nano-resonant structures (8) interact in response to the generally two-dimensional charged particle beam (10) and generate electromagnetic energy (16).
