[Also in Division D1] Unwoven pile fabrics and velvets are made by a method comprising coating two supporting bands with an adhesive layer and passing them through a zone in which they are spaced apart and parallel, with the two adhesive layers facing each other, applying a continuous element or elements e.g. parallel spun or continuous filament yarns of cotton, wool or synthetic resin, or bands or strips of paper, felt or plastic material such as polyamides, first to one and then to the other adhesive face so that the continuous elements form a zig-zag pattern therein between, causing at least one of the adhesive layers to set, and separating the support bands. The method is characterized by causing the continuous element or elements to be folded back away from each support layer before being applied thereto. If both adhesive layers are set the elements are cut between the supporting bands thus forming two strips each having a pile. If only one adhesive layer is hardened the supporting band with the unset adhesive is stripped off, so as to produce a looped pile. The support bands may be wholly covered or covered at intervals with adhesive so as to produce a variety of patterns. As shown, a web 1, Fig. 3, of supporting material supplied from a reel is fed over the flat upper surface of the machine, is coated thereon with a settable adhesive, and is drawn down vertically in a central zone opposite a similarly coated web or endless belt 2. A web 21 of pile material is led vertically to the zone and is folded, and pressed to the adhesive coated surfaces at the entrance to the zone, in zig-zag fashion by mechanism including on one side a blade 22, extending across the zone, and on the other a series of fingers 37, on levers 28 operated by a jacquard mechanism, which press parts only of the web to the adhesive surface in a predetermined pattern. Alternatively plain blades 22, or jacquard-operated fingers may be used on both sides of the zone. Folding is assisted according to the invention by blades 34, carried on spring-pressed levers 35, which turn the web 21 back from the tips of the blades or fingers and ensure line contacts only. The blade 22 is carried on levers 33 which are articulated at 24 to levers 25 rockable on a shaft 27 and are also slotted at 56 to receive a shaft 55 lifted and lowered vertically by brackets 53 and rods 50. The blade has a downward and forward movement resulting from the action of the levers 32 and 25. The levers 28 carrying the fingers 37 are given a similar movement, being raised and lowered vertically by rods 49, brackets 57 and a beam 59, and articulated at 30 to levers 31 rocking about a shaft 32. Rocking of the shafts 27, 32 is effected through links 43<SP>1</SP>, 44, 45 which, together with the rods 49, 50, are camoperated. Jacquard cords 61 raise selected levers 28 against a stop 60. The movement of the blades 34 is effected by levers 36 on the shafts 27, 32, which engage the levers 35, each blade being pressed forward as the blade 22, or the fingers 37, opposite thereto comes or come into operation. The web 1, and the web or endless belt 2, with the adhered pile material, descending vertically, pass through chambers containing electric heaters or air circulating coolers in which both sides of the fabric may be heated to set the adhesive or one side may be cooled to prevent setting, the web or belt on that side being removed. In the former case the pile may be cut as at A, Fig. 5a, to produce two pile fabrics, which may be patterned if the jacquardoperated levers are used to secure adhesion of the pile in selected areas only or the adhesive is applied or masked in selected areas. In the latter case removal of the belt 80, Fig. 5e, produces a full or patterned looped pile 85 on the base web 81. In Fig. 5f unset adhesive 89 applied in varied thickness is used to produce a relief looped pattern. Fig. 5h shows material to be divided into two cut pile fabrics in which wefts 90 have been inserted before the pilefolding operation.
