PURPOSE: A character generator and a method for making captions and graphics using the same are provided to enable a user to exclude the conversion of a file into a tape by including a rendering engine which enable the direct input of a caption or graphic into a file of a camera. CONSTITUTION: A user interface(50) generates a caption or a graphic, and stores the caption or graphic as a data structure at a memory. A rendering engine(51) generates an image based on the data structure. A video decoder(52) converts a file into an image, and a mixer(53) synthesizes the image generated by the rendering engine with the image converted by the video decoder. A video encoder(54) converts the synthesized image into a file.
