Frequency deviation (df) in the oscillator signal at a receiver is determined w.r.t. the predetermined frequency of an oscillator signal generated at the transmitter. The oscillator signal at the transmitter end is used to generate a modulated signal (u) which is transmitted to the receiver via a transmission channel. The pulse response or the transmission function of the channel is determined by sampling the modulated signal at at least two points. The corresponding signal values at the two points are stored. A reconstructed modulated signal is obtained from the pulse response or the transmission function and compared with the stored modulated signal value. The phase shift between the incoming modulated signal and the reconstructed signal is used as a measurement of the frequency deviation.
