PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system which is excellent in convenience in telephone directory management, and to provide an external terminal control method. SOLUTION: The telephone system 1 includes an external terminal 10 and a telephone device 20. The external terminal 10 stores telephone number information 101. The telephone device 20 includes a master unit 30 and a key telephone set 40 and is connectable with the plurality of external terminals 10. The telephone device 20 includes a number acquiring unit 201 and a number transmitting unit 202. The number acquiring unit 201 acquires the telephone number information 101 stored in the external terminal 10. On the basis of operation of the key telephone set 40, the number transmitting unit 202 uses the telephone number information 101 acquired from the external terminal 10 by the number acquiring unit 201 and transmits the acquired telephone number information to an opposite partner specified by the relevant telephone number information via the master unit 30.
