The compound of formula: <IMAGE> is prepared by heating at 130-140 DEG C, in the presence of an acid, a mixture of 2-(2-thenyl)-1,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,6- and -1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine. This mixture can be obtained from 2-cyano-4-methylpyridine by reaction with 2-thienyllithium, reduction of the 2-thienyl 4-methyl-2-pyridyl ketone thus formed by means of hydrazine, quaternisation with a methyl halide with formation of a 2-(2-thenyl)-1,4-dimethylpyridinium halide and reduction of the latter with NaBH4. The compound I and its salts have an analgesic activity comparable with that of dextropropoxyphene.
