PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for inspection of an image reading apparatus, capable of achieving a sensitive color deviation measurement without making a size of a device larger, more complicate, and an inefficiency of an inspection time by scanning. SOLUTION: The method is provided for inspecting the image reading apparatus for forming images on a plurality of receiving element rows where manuscript image information is arranged in the direction of main scanning and reading the image information of different colors. The method has a step of acquiring a first color deviation amount from image information based on a first pattern which is a first stripe pattern which is placed in an optically equal position to a manuscript surface with respect to the receiving element rows and where a white bar and a black bar of a same width are alternately lined and where a longitudinal direction of the white bar and the black bar is vertical to the direction of main scanning, a step of acquiring a second color deviation amount from image information based on a second pattern which is a second stripe pattern where a white bar and a black bar are alternately lined and the longitudinal direction of the white bar and the black bar has an angle from the direction of the main scanning, and a step of calculating a color deviation amount of a sub-scanning direction vertical to the main scanning direction based on the first and the second color deviation amount.
