PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a gene transfer agent, by which the gene transfer agent narrow in molecular weight distribution and excellent in gene transfer activity can efficiently be produced by a photo-irradiation living polymerization. SOLUTION: The method for producing the gene transfer agent, including a process for performing a photo-irradiation living polymerization in a solution, is characterized by performing the photo-irradiation in a state that a photo-irradiation means whose solution contact surface comprises a light-transmissible resin is soaked in the solution. By soaking the photo-irradiation means in the reaction solution and performing the reaction in the state, the gene transfer agent having a narrow molecular weight distribution and excellent gene transfer activity can be obtained.
