PURPOSE: A method and a device for processing an audio signal are provided to adjust a volume according genre, channel of an input signal by using metadata explaining a characteristic of an input signal as reference information. CONSTITUTION: A volume measuring unit(1210) measures a volume of an input signal. A memory unit(1220) stores nonlinear gain curve expresses relation among target volume information expressing a target volume of the input signal and a volume of an input signal and a volume of an output signal. A primary gain determining unit determines a first gain by suing the volume of the input signal the target volume information. A secondary gain determining unit determines a secondary gain from the primary gain by using the nonlinear gain curve. A volume adjustment unit(1240) adjusts the volume of the input signal by applying the secondary gain to the input signal.
