The element has a metal foam element (1) for oxidation of hydrocarbons, and a heating mechanism (2) for heating the metal foam element. A regulation device regulates the heating mechanism such that the metal foam element is held at a preset target temperature. The heating mechanism is applied to warm up the metal foam element by resistance heating or induction heating. The heating mechanism is formed as a burner, which produces open flame for heating up the metal foam element. A zeolite layer (1a) is applied on the metal foam element. An independent claim is also included for a method for removing hydrocarbons from exhaust air.
