<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool capable of avoiding interference of a tool rest with a tailstock or the like and reducing the size thereof, and a method of working an inner diameter. <P>SOLUTION: In a lathe 1, the tool rest 4 is rotatable around a B-axis orthogonal to a vertical axis at the right angle to a C-axis such that an axis line of the tool rest 4 can be indexed in a gradient posture inclined from a horizontal plane containing the C-axis with a desired angle. Therefore, since a retreat position of the tailstock 3 can be closer to a headstock 2 than conventional ones by working while the tool rest 4 is in an inclined posture, a slide distance of the tailstock 3 can be shortened.
