<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for easily preparing an ocular lens material having high oxygen permeability and excellent in surface wettability to water, surface lubricity, water retention, contamination resistance and biocompatibility at the same time. <P>SOLUTION: The process for preparing an ocular lens material having a hydrophilic surface is characterized by comprising the steps of: (1) irradiating the surface of an ocular lens material with high-frequency plasma or excimer light; (2) contacting the surface of the ocular lens material, which is treated in accordance with the step (1), with a hydrophilic monomer-mixture solution containing at least one zwitterionic group-containing compound, water, an organic solvent and at least one kind of specified chain transferring agent; and (3) irradiating the surface of the ocular lens material, which is in the state of contacting with the hydrophilic monomer-mixture solution in the step (2), with ultraviolet rays having a wavelength of 250 to 500 nm and then, graft polymerizing the zwitterionic group-containing compound to the surface of the ocular lens material and then, forming a surface layer.
