1,144,967. Vinyl polymers modified with tetrahydrofuran polymer. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 8 Dec., 1967 [16 March, 1967], No. 55947/67. Heading C3P. A vinyl polymer containing pendant hydroxyl or carboxyl groups has grafted thereon side groups comprising polytetrahydrofuran or a copolymer of tetrahydrofuran and a substituted tetrahydrofuran. Suitable vinyl polymers include vinyl chloride-vinyl alcohol-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl neodecanate copolymers, styrene/hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymers, methyl methacrylate/ hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymers, styreneacrylic acid copolymers and polyvinyl alcohol. The grafted polymer is prepared by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran in the presence of the vinyl polymer using a catalyst comprising a Lewis acid and a promoter, e.g. boron trifluoride etherate and epichlorohydrin or an epoxy compound, or a single catalyst, e.g. SbCl 5 , PF 5 , BF 3 , triphenylmethyl- and tropylium salts and benzenediazonium hexafluorophosphate. In the examples, tetrahydrofuran is polymerized in the presence of a vinyl chloride-vinyl alcohol-vinyl acetate copolymer using BF 3 -etherate/epichlorohydrin as catalyst.
